RESEARCH PROJECT

For the past year I have been working as an illustrator and researcher with Vidyun Sabhaney. We have been researching traditional storytelling forms in India - Bengali Patua Chitra, Leather Puppetry from Karnataka and Rajasthani Kaavad. An important part of this project is visually documenting these traditions through live sketches of artists and their practice. These images will ultimately be uploaded onto an online archive of all of the information we have gathered during our research. Below is a sample.

'CHILKA'

This is an page from a comic called 'Chilka' that I made with Vidyun Sabhaney. It will be published in August 2012 by Penguin India, as part of an anthology of comics compiled by The Pao Collective (https://www.facebook.com/paocollective).

"Narrated by the trouble-making rishi Narad, this story tracks the journey of Baba- an amnesiac yet old-school warrior who believes that it his “destiny” to save the Pandava Arjuna from his rival Karna. All this from someone who can’t remember what he ate for breakfast in the morning! Unfortunately, Baba‘s debilitating memory problem is accompanied by the will of an ox, leading him rather unceremoniously to the eye of the storm -the Battle of Kurukshetra! This comic started as an experiment and the pair intends to create a full comic book series on the Mahabharata of this nature."

'ON AIR'

This image is from a commercial project I worked on for Radio Mirchi (ENIL) -
a 360 page book on radio programming, complete with illustrations and comics.
The illustrations were meant to visually explain radio programming to Radio Mirchi staff.
Unfortunately, most of this material is copyright, so I can't post more images.
The project extended from 2008-2009, and was finally printed in 2010.
